The Conflict

The United States government was at odds with NASGO (the North American Supernatural Governing Organization) once again. NASGO had requested $5 billion more in funding, and the United States was happy to grant it- until it was revealed that over half of that money had gone missing. For the next year, NASGO's budget was slashed in half (and Canada, following the United States' lead, refused to compensate for it), so the supernatural community panicked.
The next months were filled back-and-forth between the US government. While the US and Canada threatened to take away more money from NASGO, the organization threatened to suspend their law enforcement program. When the US sent a third party to do an independent investigation of NASGO, the organization refused to meet with the government at all. The supernatural community grew unhappy with this political stalemate, and the conflict slowly began to escalate. There were protests at NASGO's headquarters in New Mexico, and violence even broke out in its offices.
Ultimately, things came to a breaking point. One night, the news broke that Alfonso Williams, the President of the United States, had been assassinated at the White House. The only evidence left of the assassin was a handwritten note detailing a list of grievances against the United States government. NASGO and the United States government alike were thrown into chaos as they attempted to come up with a way to rationalize the assassination to the American public. The public explanation was that President Williams had been killed by a disgruntled ex-lover; conspiracy theories, predictably, ran amok, but ultimately, the true explanation was never revealed.
The supernatural community continued to be displeased with this, and NASGO's power over the supernaturals slowly began to dwindle, until it was more a government in name than in practice. They maintained control over Nascha Chee Academy and a few other supernatural-exclusive facilities, but the speakeasies and underground organizations that made up much of supernatural society ended up taking either one side or another. Eventually, two sides emerged besides NASGO: the Confederation for Supernatural Freedom ("the CSF"), and the Supernatural Insurgency of North America ("SINA").
Both of these groups sought to take away the power of NASGO, and were displeased with the state of supernatural politics and the relationship with normal human governments. The CSF, however, wanted to cut ties with the governments of the United States and Canada, and emerge with the French Supernatural Governing Agency in Europe, ultimately forming a group that would cater to the needs of supernaturals globally. SINA, on the other hand, wanted to remain restricted to North America only, and wanted to stay connected to Canada and the United States. Instead, SINA wanted to replace NASGO's system of a Chancellor and High Council with a two-house system headed by a Chancellor that mimicked that of the United States. In addition, NASGO, the CSF, and SINA all blamed supporters of the other group for NASGO's financial crisis and for the assassination of President Williams.
As NASGO's power slowly slipped away, the CSF and SINA swooped in, gathering supporters from all over North America. At the same time, no small amount of supernaturals opted to remain neutral in the fight, simply hoping that they'd be left standing when it was all said and done. Nascha Chee Academy remained one of the few truly neutral places in the supernatural world. This was in no small part because of the efforts of the staff; most students at Nascha Chee are completely unaware of the existence of the conflict to begin with. However, it has begun to slip into the school, and both students and staff have begun to take sides, quietly, out of the view of their peers and superiors. It is only a matter of time before the violence spills into the campus.
And at the same time, a number of people are more interested in untangling the web of lies that began everything rather than quarreling over "what-if"s and "maybe"s- and those people, more often than not, find themselves at home at Nascha Chee.
