Full Name: Catalina Alicia Dominguez
Gender: Female
Age: 15
Species: Unicorn
Grade: Sophmore
Physical Description:
Catalina, in her human form, has olive skin and dark brown eyes. Notably, her hair is a brilliant white with a few strands of siver through it, immediately marking her as either a silvan or a unicorn. She prefers not to dye it, instead explaining the color to humans as particularly good hair dye. She tends to wear light clothing, and can often most be found wearing light pink or blue. She isn't particularly picky about her shoes, and typically wears a pair of beaten-up old tennis shoes. Her hair is brushed meticulously, and is usually kept down rather than in any sort of tie. She prefers to wear lighter clothing, such as skirts and plain T-shirts, rather than heavier clothing like jeans and sweatshirts. During the cold Minnesota winters, however, she can usually be found in a thick winter coat, the same color as her usual attire.
In her unicorn form, Catalina is on the taller end of the spectrum, being about six feet and an inch tall, excluding her horn. Her body is lighter in build but muscular, resembling a Thoroughbred. Her mane and tail are long- her tail sweeps onto the ground, and Catalina finds herself having to periodically trim it, lest she trips. Her coat is light palomino in color, and her mane is a white color. Her horn is around a foot and a half tall, and matches her mane in color and shade.
Birthday: January 14th
Hometown: Pasadena, California
History:
Catalina's father was a Panamanian jockey named Fernando Dominguez. At the age of twenty-three, he moved to the United States to make a living on the racetrack riding thoroughbred racehorses. He found success in a handful of local stakes races in California. Catalina's mother was a woman named Olivia Caron, born in French Canada of Métis descent to a family that owned a small stable of racehorses. At the age of 25, she took over her family stables and moved them to Southern California, seeking more opportunities for breeding and racing.
Fernando first rode horses for Olivia as a substitute rider- the normal jockey had been thrown off his horse in an earlier race, and Fernando was the jockey they picked to substitute. He didn't win the race, but he and Olivia immediately hit it off. It wasn't long before Olivia invited him to ride more of her horses. One thing turned to another, and eventually, Olivia and Fernando began dating. Although uncomfortable with the prospect of their personal and business lives merging, Olivia and Fernando continued to find success in their partnership with the horses.
Their greatest success came in a Grade One race on a horse named Catherine's Kitten, a longshot that just barely managed to pass the other horses in the last stage of the race. She had been owned and trained by Olivia, and Fernando had ridden her in every race. Although neither the owner nor jockey ever managed to repeat that success, they couldn't be happier. Six months later, Olivia discovered that she was pregnant- three months after that, she and Fernando wed.
They named their daughter Catalina, using the Spanish spelling of "Catherine" in honor of their most successful horse. Catalina grew up speaking English, Spanish, and French, and became passionate about language early in her childhood. She went to a private bilingual school, with classes alternating between English and Spanish. While Catalina studied French on her own time, and was able to speak it fluently, she never learned to read or write it.
In her early years of childhood, Catalina's father taught her to ride horses. Her first horse was the stable pony belonging to her mother, that escorted the racehorses from the stable to the race track. Eventually, between managing a stable and riding horses, Catalina's parents could no longer spend so much time with her. Catalina eventually started spending her time around her mother's stables, where she often rode the stable ponies and the retired geldings that were kept around to help train the youngsters.
Middle school was difficult for Catalina. None of her classmates from her private school had gone to the same middle school, and most people at the middle school already had a group of friends. She instead spent most of her time doing her homework, so she could go down to the stables without having to do much homework, if any. Her grades were good, but Catalina simply wasn't happy at her school. She was more quiet than anything, and although she talked to people, she never really connected with anybody.
When Catalina was in eighth grade, she found herself home alone one night, and couldn't sleep. She went to pace around her room, and then, well, she wasn't really sure what happened. Suddenly she didn't feel quite right, and she could swear that she heard the familiar sound of horse hooves instead of her own footsteps. She came across a mirror in her house, and when she looked at herself in it, she was no longer human. Staring back at her was a horse with a palomino coat- and even stranger, with a horn on her head, but somehow it felt right. There was a point where she felt normal again, and she was able fall asleep later that night.
There was a part of Catalina that thought she had just been delirious, but it had seemed so real. At the same time, what her had seen and witnessed was surely impossible. Still, she yearned for it to happen again, to see that when she looked in the mirror. And one night, two months later, she did again; this time, nothing had seemed off, but Catalina had caught a glance of herself in the mirror, and she did not look human. The palomino unicorn had returned, and Catalina was overjoyed somehow. Shapeshifting between the two forms came naturally over time- Catalina wasn't even quite sure how she had figured it out, but it was almost as simply as moving an arm or a leg, and just as instinctive. More and more often, she would shapeshift into a unicorn and walk around her home, but she would never do it outside the house and never when her parents were around. Something frightened her about her parents discovering this ability of hers.
When Catalina was called to the office towards the end of her eighth grade year, she wasn't sure what they wanted. The office revealed to her that they had received a letter inviting Catalina to a boarding school called "Nascha Chee Academy", in northern Minnesota. Suspicious of the letter, and being unable to find much information about the school of the internet, Catalina's parents met with a representative from the school. They were told that the school had been impressed by Catalina's grades and her multicultural background, and had invited her for that reason. Realizing that they hardly ever saw their daughter anyways, Catalina's parents sent her off to the Academy.
Upon her arrival there at the start of the next school year, Catalina learned that she was not alone. Everybody there was a "supernatural", as they called it- and that was huge to her. She shared classes with dragons and vampires, and she fit in with them because she was apart of them. Her first year at Nascha Chee was spent enjoying herself, riding the horses and playing in the swimming pool on the warmer days. Coming from southern California, the snow and cold temperatures in the winter were a bit of a shock, but she enjoyed her year overall, and relished the chance to learn about supernaturals and how she fit into all of it. At one point during her freshman year, Catalina woke up to find her hair entirely white. Although initially concerned about the sudden change, she was assured by a teacher that it was normal for unicorns, albeit uncommon.
Anything Else: She is fluent in both English and Spanish. In addition, she can fluently speak the Métis variety of Canadian French, but cannot read or write French.
